Tranquil Waters Retirement Village Regatta - 30th March 2014

Date:  30th March 2014

Venue: Redland Bay, adjacent to the Tranquil Waters Retirement Village.

Weather: Overcast with occasional light showers.

                 Light SE breeze.

                 Full but ebbing tide.

Race report: Because of the threatening weather, only seven club members arrived for the regatta. Scott volunteered to be OOD and set an appropriate course for the conditions [ two triangles and a windward and return]. Start time was delayed as Scott had to retrieve John Holland’s boat after he lost radio contact and it headed off towards Stradbroke Island.

It soon became apparent that boats would experience difficulties as there was a substantial amount of sea grass floating in the bay. All boats were affected in most races.

Racing got underway at approximately 9.40 with a small chop and a steady breeze. However by race three, the breeze started dropping and as a result the waves decreased. By race eight, the bay was a virtual mill pond. Despite the lack of breeze and the presence of the sea grass, racing was keenly contested and finishes in most races very close. Both Dudley and Mike experienced radio problems and retired early. Because of the lack of wind and the sea grass, racing stopped at approximately 12 noon after six races. Andrew was the eventual winner followed by John McLachlan. John Holland and Jack Ford tied for third but it was awarded to John on a count back.

After the racing, the skippers were invited to a barbeque and presentation of the perpetual trophy and medals provided by the management of the Retirement Village.

Special thanks to Excommodore Bernie Cornish for organizing the event and Scott for acting as OOD.

 The Fox.
