QLD Events

N/QLD RM Championship - 7th June 2014


Saturday the 7th June, saw the Townsville Model Marine Club host the 2014 NQ RM Championships at their venue. With only eight skippers turning up, it was decided that racing would commence at 10:30 AM and finish on the same day at 4 PM with a lunch break at around 12:30 PM

After the skippers briefing, the course was set in a very light and fluky breeze that was coming from the south, which was unusual for this time of year as Townsville club had been experiencing strong winds right up until Friday the day before the event. After setting a course the racing got underway with Colin and Tim electing to use their B rig’s while everyone else went for their A rig, as these pair had decided that the breeze would kick in very shortly.  After about four races they decided that the breeze will not change all day and so with the mad scurry they elected to change to their A rigs, much to the disappointment of the other skippers as they were winning and now they realised that Colin and Tim were now serious competitors.

The racing was competitive and close as the breeze settled in to be around 5 knots and everyone became used to the wind shifts and were able to utilise them to their best advantage.  All the skippers showed excellent sportsmanship and helped each other to improve their boats to be more competitive and a lot of friendly banter was had between them all so that the day became very enjoyable and the racing was excellent.  However after 17 races the race committee said enough’s enough, and closed the event as some people had a long way to drive.

The Townsville club presented the winner with a trophy and the results showed that Tim Arland was the new 2014 N. Queensland RM champion by one point from the reigning champion Colin Cameron,  Ross Anderson from the Mackay club was third followed by his son Dean, then came Alan, Bob, Rod and Garth.  It was a pity that we had so few skippers however everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and all are looking forward to the next time that we meet.  The winning club for the annual tri-series event went to the Mackay club for this year.

Queensland EC12 Championship - 6th July 2014

Brisk would be the best way to describe the weather. Sunny with a winter westerly gusting up to around 20 kph.

6 skippers lined up for the event which got under way around 10 am under the guidance of PRO Jeff Bryerley. This will likely be Jeff’s final stint as PRO as he is moving to Tasmania – seems he likes the cooler weather. The BRYC would like to thank Jeff for his contribution and wish him well.

“B” Rigs were in fashion, and if some of us had had “C” rigs we would have sorely tempted. An EC12 running down the breeze is quite a handful.

At times there was close racing, but at other times the fleet was strung out like Brown’s cows as, in the conditions, any sort of error was usually quite costly. In spite of that the day was most enjoyable with all skippers accepting penalties with good grace and humour.

Unfortunately, David Hill had to retire at lunch time due to ill health, and that is why you will see no photos of David’s yacht as the “official” photographer didn’t show up until the afternoon. Hope you are on the mend, David.

A good day was had by all and, by mutual agreement, we finished up just on 3:00 pm. We had sailed 20 races and it meant we could pack up and get home by dark.

QLD RM Championship - 18th May 2014

The 2014 Queensland RM Championship was hosted by Paradise Radio Yacht Club on the 18th May.

An initial entry list of 15 was reduced to 12 by the start of racing due to personal reasons and one boat catching on fire due to an electrical problem during tune up.

PRO Bill Clancy got the racing underway once a light southerly breeze filled in and the Dragon Boats cleared the course area. Tim Brown sailing a Starkers 3 hit his straps early with Jeff Byerley sailing a borrowed NRW3 hot on his heels. By the lunch break Sean Wallis sailing in his first Regatta with his Vibe had moved into second. Tim holding a 4 point advantage.

Fluctuating winds caused a number of course changes , misfortunes (Tim ran aground and was stuck on the point while the fleet sailed away) and Rig changes.
A number of skippers posted PB’s with Steve Tyler winning a race and Dennis Crawley claiming a second.

Tim maintained his lead for the remainder of the day with Sean in hot pursuit as he came more to grips with his RM. Jeff Byerley took third place.
A very enjoyable Regatta sailed in good spirit, no protests and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Central Queensland M Championship - 2014

Central Qld Marblehead Championships held on the 29th and 30th March, hosted by the Fraser Coast RYC saw 10 skippers from 6 clubs contest a total of 41 races. Congratulations to Mark Beneke 1st, John McIntosh 2nd and Dennis Crawley 3rd. Special mention goes to Mark Harris and Kim Mitchell who came in 4th and 5th. The top 5 boats were very close throughout the championship. The breeze remained fairly constant for most of the races, which saw Mark and John go into the last race on equal points. In an exciting last race, Mark found that little bit extra and won by 3 points. 

Thank you to all the skippers for an enjoyable championship and to Ian Ashes (Pro), David Black (scoring) and Gail McIntosh for organising the event.

S/QLD IOM Championship - 16/17th November 2013

S/QLD Laser Championship - 10th November

With a fine day and moderate north to north-east winds predicted all was looking promising for a good day’s competition.

A small fleet of 10 boats lined up at around 10:00am and, almost on cue, the wind dropped out. 

PRO Ian Ashe set about trying to figure out where the breeze was coming from, but for a while it was hard to find, and the first two races were a bit of a lottery. 

Ian had placed a small stick with a length of cotton attached as a tell-tale, and by the end of the day that piece of cotton was wound around the stick quite a number of times.

Eventually the breeze did kick in, and with a vengeance, from the north-east and the tempo of racing picked up. The day had started out with all skippers electing to use their “A “rigs, but by the end of the day they were all down to “C” rigs, and the boats were still proving to be quite a handful.

 I thought my EC12 was a problem child in a stiff wind, but I have yet to see it bury its hull, stand on its head, and reverse direction, all in single movement!!  

With a one design class such as the Laser you can all but eliminate the boat as a factor and it all comes down to the skipper’s skill and experience. A quick glance at the score sheet will reveal that Peter Burford had a well-deserved win with consistent scores throughout the 20 races.

It was a close run thing between Ray Naismith and Peter O’Grady for second and third places.

In spite of the testing conditions there were relatively few incidents and gear failures, however commiserations to Ray Grigson whose boat decided enough was enough.

The BRYC extends its appreciation to those skippers who attended, and for the manner in which they conducted themselves. Thank you to Ian Ashe for performing the duties of PRO, Clive Ball (catering), Dennis Crawley (buoy watcher, buoy mover and boat rescuer) and, of course, David Black (scoring)

QLD Multi-Hull Titles - 4th November 2013

A beautiful day for the titles. 9 boats nominated from the Sunshine Coast, and Brisbane and environs, but, unfortunately, a boat had terminal gear problems before the start and he couldn’t race.

4 new club memberships on the day – Darryn Bell, Rob Clark,  Bruce Legg, and the club’s first lady member, Jan Manning, partner of Rob.

The day began with a flukey  breeze, very light North to North-easter. It improved by about 11am so racing was started.

The first few races proceed without too much incident, except for one member retrieving his boat to find it was minus a cross-beam after a bingle. The beam couldn’t be found, so he was a spectator for the rest of the day. (He declared it was one of the best days racing he’s had – no stress.) The wind began to strengthen, and gear failure set in, with a number of withdrawals, so lunch was called after 6 races – a very nice BBQ.

With the increase in the N-N.E. breeze, S.E. Queensland’s  fresh water lake nemesis struck – the dreaded water weed, drifting down from the top of Lake Kurongbah. There’s also a healthy bank of weed starting to grow at the sailing end of the lake, to add to our woes.

After lunch racing re-commenced in a stiffening breeze. A number of withdrawals occurred with gear failures.

After many problems caused by weed entangling the rudders, the rescue boat was sent out to patrol the course, clearing the weed as it arrived, freeing the boats, and generally directing the traffic away from potential disasters.

Racing was called off after 11 races, and a very clear winner was declared.

Graham Bull had managed to steer clear of most of the problems, and with masterly sailing collected quite a few first places. He collected the Titles shield, with Ken Smith , second, and Ray Smith, third.

Graham also won the club championship trophy – Well done, Graham!

The Club’s Christmas break-up will be held at Lake Kurongbah on Sunday, December 1, (BYO), and the Springfield Lakes break-up will be on Tuesday, December 3.




C/QLD IOM Champs - 5/6th October 2013

Day 1.

A beautiful Gladstone day greeted the 14 sailors on day 1 that entered the CQ IOM Championships. With skippers from the Gold Coast to Mackay,

Commodore Tony Zussino from Gladstone warmly greeted everyone and with a little time on our hands before racing , everyone re acquainted themselves with infrequently seen mates.The GRCYC had set up many shaded areas for the skippers to rig up on the grassed area of the Gladstone Marina. The wind was initially SE at 7-10K but was expected to swing during the day, however this early breeze allowed PRO Ian Ashe to set an efficient up/down course with a separate start and finish line, right along the foreshore. The elevated sailing position gave all competitors a beautiful view of the course and their machines. 

Racing got underway on time and the Fraser Coasts Mark Beneke sailing his Pikanto got away to a flyer with two bullets straight out the gun with veteran skipper Allan Walker from Brisbane showing he was going to be around the mark with consistent top 3 finishes. Col Cameron from Mackay must have been making around with his power boats and neglecting his IOM as Cols found himself on the wrong end of a transmitter/receiver glitch and missed the first 5 races, until John Matthews from the GRCYC organised another one for him. Thanks John. Doug Allen from Kawana on the Sunny Coast was duelling with Glen Foley from Bundaberg trading blows at the pointy end of the fleet until Doug hit form and secured a string of top 3 finishes including a few firsts while Glen found a couple of big scores, ready for discarding. 

Dave Laurie now at the Fraser Coast returned to his old sailing grounds and soon found consistency would be the key as some top 5 finishes were interspersed with some big numbers at the other end. Gladstone's Steve Bray, sailing in only his second championship showed some blistering speed at times but like his fellow, more championship experienced GRCYC sailors, Grant Cooper, Aaron Farrar and Laurie Donohoe couldn't keep finnding interesting ways to wrestle victory from the jaws of defeat and the local sailors featured down the list on their home ground. John Macintosh from the Fraser Coast, Ross Anderson from Mackay and John Tootell from Bundaberg were having their own personal battle with each other, occasionally showing glimpses of brilliance, threatening to break away from each other, hinting of still better races to come.

Lunch couldn't come soon enough for some struggling sailors and soon the ladies of the GRCYC had a magnificent spread of meat & salad rolls and trays of cakes, which were appreciated by everyone. David Black who also made the trip north handed out the score sheets, even if you didn't want to see the progressive scores and it was evident that already a top 4 had broken away from the main pack. Mark Beneke, Allan Walker, Doug Allen and Glen Foley seemed destined to fight it out for the glass wear, even with a day to go. The wind started on it's expected swinging arc to the north and soon John and the pick up boat were called into action, swinging the buoys around to accommodate the worst direction for viewing, an on shore breeze. Ian battled with the course, setting the fairest racing possible and with the change in direction came a change in intensity and fortunes for a few of the sailors.

Grant Cooper and Col Cameron took a shine to the windier conditions and posted some great scores while the top 4 seemed to just go about their business, except for some hiccups for Mark Beneke, copping a couple of technical dramas and a decent sized palm frond around the keel, assisting in some discards.

Ian Ashe called racing to a halt at 4:30 with an incredible 18 races completed and not one argument – that would have to be a record.

Day 2

It was expected to be a drifter but sailors were delighted with a light north easterly, allowing for a course to be set immediately and racing getting underway at 10. Dave Harris, who could join the fleet yesterday due to work commitments got straight into the action and was threatening the scoreboard immediately. Allan Walker hit the course running with a great first up win but was chased around the course by Gladstone's Steve Bray who was showing some much improved form. Also on the improve was Grant Cooper who finally hit form and less marks, posting some good scores and closing the gap on Bundaberg rival Glen Foley. As with all of the event so far, Doug, Allan and Mark had less than 5 points separating them most of the day, with lead changes on the scoreboard a regular thing. The wind strengthening, teaming with the windward marks being a long way fro the sailors caused some interesting mark roundings …. BUT even then the sailors were adult, sophisticated and considerate….

The racing tightened up, the finishes were close and after 35 races… Allan Walker and Doug Allen tied on 87 points and the scorers had to go to the count back system to separate them with Allan Walker eventually awarded the 2013 CQ IOM Championship.

Many may have been disappointed with a smaller than normal turn out for an event like this…., but with the way the event was run by Ian Ashe, scored by David Black and organised by the fantastic members of the GRCYC…. the sailors that did make the effort to travel enjoyed themselves immensely.

Queensland 10R Champs - 27/28th July


Queensland EC12 Champs - 13/14th July 2013

Well, here it is, Sunday morning, and it’s cold and wet, and miserable. So I am pleased we decided to make the event a one day affair.

Eight skippers entered and they all showed up at the new BRYC venue at Eagleby. One or two got a little disoriented finding their way there, but all eventually made it.

It was a glorious winter morning, with a bit of a chill in the air, and a light south westerly which lasted until just after racing commenced at 10 .00 am.

The first few races were real drifters and but just after 11.00 am the breeze came in again from the south east and generally stayed with us, swinging to the east late in the afternoon.

A total of 21 races were sailed with the final one completing at about 4.30 with the sun very low in west.

Skippers were all well behaved, and the PRO’s biggest problem was setting a course, and that’s as it should be.

Racing between the top four was close and results were consistent throughout the day. Interim score sheets were identical with respect to placings for all skippers.

At race 20 the top two skippers were tied, and it was the worst possible time for Gary Taylor to hit a mark. Still, he was running second all day, so why spoil a perfect record.

The BRYC extends it thanks to Ian Ashe for performing the duties of PRO, David Black for scoring (as always) and Dennis Crawley chief bouy “mover abouter”, rescue boat operator, and official photographer. We also thank River Sands Pty Ltd for making the venue available to the Model Yacht fraternity.

The Eagleby venue is still in its infancy, but already indications are that it is an ideal spot for model yachting, with no weed, acres of water, and no obstructions to disturb whatever breeze is on offer. The BRYC is hopeful of hosting many more events on this lake.

C/QLD M & A Champs - 1/2nd December

Marblehead - Saturday 1st December,

Six skippers line up on the pond at Bundaberg Botanical garden pond at 10am the wind was from the N/E 5 to 10 kn the PRO, John Tootell Manage to set a cource to suit the wind the late arrival of Mark Beneke maid it seven, right from the start it was a hard sail contest between Mark,glen Foley and John Mcintosh with Mark coming out on top, Ray Nasmith, Garry Taylor, Yeoman Sand and Ian Kirly making up the miner places, with ten races completed by 12,30 it was time for lunch break, thanks must go to Gail Mcintosh and Maureen Sands doing the scorering,and John Tootell's wife for organizing the lunch,,

A Class - Saturday 1st December,

After lunch the A class boats were on the water with PRO Ian Kirly useing the same croase that RM had sailed on to suit the N/E wind of 10/15 kns, with Garry Taylor setting the pace followed closely by Glen Foley and Ray Nasmith, Yeoman Sands,John Tottell and John Mcintosh sorting the miner places,by 4pm had completed eight races, Making it a long day with the Rm champs in the Morning and the A's in the afternoon, tomorrow we will have The Bundaberg Handycap challang with the combind fleets, thanks must go to Gail Mcintosh and Maureen Sands for doing the scoreing.

Handicap - Sunday 2nd December

Sunday dawn fine and hot with the wind light from the N/E forecast was 10 to 15kns later on in the day, seven skippers fronted up to the start line, three A class boat's and four Marblehead boats to contest the mixed handy cap event, Gail McIntosh was the handicapper and Maureen Sands taking the finish times, Glen Foley and John McIntosh set the order for the first races with Mark Beneke plus John Tootell with there Marblehead's in the light wind and as the the wind freshened the A class boats off Garry Taylor, Yeoman Sands and Ray Nasmith came to the front, by 2,30pm had completed 14 races  with Garry in first place Mark 2nd and John Mcintosh 3rd, finishing off a great weekend for the first Bundy Challenge combining the two class , thanks must go to the laides for running the event and John Tootell wife organising the lunch's,

Brisbane IOM Challenge 2013

Day One of the 2013 Brisbane IOM Challenge being held at Carbrook this weekend was proving to be a ‘challenge’ in more ways than one this year! I arrived at the River Sands site soon after lunch where there had only been four heats completed due to the shortage of wind

and it was also obvious that showers had also passed over the venue as it was soggy under foot.

Two more A and B fleets were sailed and despite the assurances that my presence had also apparently ‘brought the breeze’, sailing was slow and by mid afternoon it was decided to combine both fleets into one flotilla. With the increased number of boats on the water also came the amplified number of mistakes with busier start lines and buoy rounding’s as at least two race starts were recalled and crowding at the top marks had one incident go to protest and in a separate event two other boats became hooked for a short time. Although the protest itself was orderly and quickly resolved, none of the skippers were disheartened by the off-the-water down time as the protest fittingly coincided with an even further lull in the elusive breeze.

Earlier Allan BRYANT (#42) had had transmitter problems and the repair had necessitated the reversal of the transmitter stick and spring tension which was leaving Allan more fingers-than-thumbs as he was coming to terms with the opposite direction of the controls. Our ARYA President Lindsay WALKER (#2) sat out a couple of the heats and the ship Hakuna Matata (#12) owned by Maurice GRISMAN was also eventually sidelined and de-rigged... “Hakuna Matata” is a Swahili phrase that can be translated literally as "There are no worries."

It is also good to see our shipmate Bill CLANCY (#0) back on the water sailing in an event as Bill is usually shore-bound as the PRO for major events as his skills are highly respected in this field; Bill also appears to be in serious contention to place well in this event as the overriding competition appears to be between Bill and current IOM National Champion Michael GRIEVE (#10) for top honours.

As always we are extremely grateful for the dedication of David BLACK and Ann WALKER in scoring the event, Ian ASHE as PRO and Val BLACK for running the kitchen. Final results tomorrow...

Day Two of the 2013 Brisbane IOM Challenge saw more action both on and off the water than the previous day. Despite obvious heavy rain during the night and being sodden underfoot the wind conditions had at least improved to enable more heats to be completed. Earlier in the day two protests had also been heard. As I arrived, father and son team John and Grant HUDSON were retiring from the regatta as heat 23 was crossing the finish line. Race 24 was run-and-won without any incidents while the start of heat 25 necessitated a restart, after which as the fleet rounded the first buoy, the disparity between the fleet leaders and trailing boats was markedly obvious as the fleet was clearly strewn over the length of the entire field.

The penultimate and what would be the last race of the day had Tony GREY leading both heats, challenging Michael GRIEVE and Matt CHEW respectively in two very good races, Tony narrowly missing out on both heat wins to settle for impressive second placings.

With struggling wind conditions again returning to the site, the fleet was called off the water as time, environment and course conditions were contemplated... the fleet was called back to the water and heat 26 was started, but as no tacking was apparent on the run into the first mark the race was abandoned and this also concluded any further sailing.

Congratulations to overall winners Michael GRIEVE, Matt CHEW and Tim BROWN; as can be seen from the final points table, Michael placed in 18 of the 25 heats completed, eleven of which were actual race wins.

As always we are extremely grateful for the dedication of David BLACK and Ann WALKER in scoring the event, Ian ASHE as PRO and Val BLACK for running the kitchen and the many members whom go unnamed to make these events possible.

South Queensland IOM Championship - 17-18th November 2012

The event was held on Lake Orr near the Bond University site, and hosted by the Nationals Organising Committee.

There were 25 entries.

Conditions on the Saturday morning were variable and PRO Bill Clancy was set a task of trying to set a course with the wind being very unstable. The seeding races were won by Tom Butler and Michael Grieve, and the fleets organized. Brad Johnston then set out to show the fleet a clean pair of heels. Making very good starts and building on that foundation.

Alan Walker and Lindsay Walker were along with Michael, giving Brad a good challenge. Others to show out were the 2 welcome visitors from W.A., Sean Wallis and Rob Mews. As is the norm, all races were sailed with #1 rigs, although at one point it did seem as though the wind would build.

At the end of the first day Brad had a very comfortable lead, and everybody hoping the threat of thunderstorms would not eventuate on the following day.

On the Sunday morning the breeze was not cooperating and racing did not start until 10.30, with an Easterly predominating.

Brad did not dominate as he had on the first day with race wins divided amongst the top bunch of skippers.

A very nice lunch was provided by the Micro Magic division of the PRYC and was much appreciated.

The wind tried it's best to interfere with the racing and eventually moved around to the north which meant the course was relocated to another arm of the lake.

With the weather threatening racing continued until 3.00pm, and the prize giving held with top spots going to Brad Johnston in first, followed by Lindsay Walker and Michael Grieve.

Thanks goes to Bill, also David and Anne for scoring and the bunch of volunteers who as usual helped the event run smoothly.
